Google Drive is a great tool for managing your work and personal files. However, sometimes you may want to use it in a dark mode so that you can’t see the contents of your file. Here are some tips on how to enable Google Drive’s dark mode:
- Open Google Drive and sign in.
- In the top left corner of the main screen, click on the three lines that look like a triangle. This will open a menu with three options: “Open in new window,” “Open in current window,” and “Customize this window.”
- In the “Open in new window” option, select “Yes, I want to open my Google Drive in a new window.”
- In the “Open in current window” option, select “No, I want to keep my current Google Drive windows open.”
- Click on the OK button to close all of the options and return to the main screen.
Not a big fan of Google Drive’s light theme? You can easily toggle on dark mode in Google Drive’s mobile app. You can also turn on dark mode in browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari using the system settings or a browser extension. Here’s how.

Turn on Google Drive’s Dark Mode on Android
On an Android phone, use the Google Drive app’s built-in option to turn your entire app dark.
Start by launching Google Drive on your phone. Then, in the app’s top-left corner, tap the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines).
In the open menu, select “Settings.”
On the “Settings” page, in the “Theme” section, tap “Choose Theme.”
Select “Dark” in the theme list.
Enable Google Drive’s Dark Mode on iPhone and iPad
On an iPhone and iPad, Google Drive respects your device’s default theme. So, if you’ve enabled your device’s dark mode, Google Drive will use that theme, too.
To enable dark mode, you must be running iOS 13 or later on your iPhone and iPadOS 13 or later on your iPad.
Launch Settings on your device. In Settings, select “Display & Brightness.”
From the “Appearance” section, select “Dark.”
Launch the Google Drive app, and you’ll notice it now uses dark mode. You’re all set.
Activate Google Drive’s Dark Mode in Chrome and Edge
Google Drive on the web doesn’t offer an official dark mode. If you want to use a dark theme on the site, you’ll have to use Chrome or Edge’s unofficial forced dark mode feature.
That feature is located in the web browser’s experimental features section. To enable it, first, launch Chrome or Edge on your desktop.
If you’re on Chrome, then type the following in the address bar and press Enter (or Return):
If you’re using Edge, enter the following in the address bar and hit Enter (or Return):
On the “Experiments” page that opens, at the top, select the “Search Flags” box and type dark.
In the search results, next to the “Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents” entry, click the drop-down menu and choose “Enabled.”
You now need to restart your browser to bring your changes into effect. To do that, in your web browser’s bottom-right corner, click “Relaunch” (Chrome) or “Restart” (Edge).
Your browser will reopen. Now, head to the Google Drive site, and you’ll find that it uses a dark theme.

Use Google Drive in Dark Mode in Firefox and Safari
Unlike Chrome and Edge, Firefox and Safari don’t have a forced dark theme for websites. Instead, you need to use a browser extension to enable dark mode on your sites, including the Google Drive site.
If you’re on Firefox, you can grab the Dark Reader extension for free. On Safari, you’ll have to buy the same extension. Once you’ve installed the extension, you can use it to toggle on dark mode.
While you’re at it, consider enabling dark mode in Gmail, Chrome, Docs, Sheets, Maps, YouTube, and Chromebook.
